That we spend our days arranging avocado toast, sipping flat whites, and casually posting beautiful content while money magically lands in our bank account.

The reality?

Well... it's a little different.

Whether you're a photographer, filmmaker, designer, or content creator, these myths seem to follow us around like that one client who still owes an invoice from 2023 - jokes, I took them to court, and they paid. BUT...that's a story for another day!

So let's set the record straight.

Myth #1: "You Must Have So Much Free Time"

"You work for yourself, right? Must be nice being able to sleep in."

Ah yes.
The famous freelance lie.

People assume self-employment means complete freedom. No boss. No office. No schedule.
In reality, most self-employed creatives don't work less.

They just work differently.
While others see the final image of a perfectly lit cocktail or burger, they don't see:

The 6am grocery run

The 10-hour editing session

The client revisions

The proposal writing

The bookkeeping

The social media posts

The emails sent at random times

The truth is that many creatives wear every hat in the business. Photographer. Videographer. Marketer. Salesperson. Accountant. Customer service representative. IT support. Therapist (mostly for themselves). Industry sources consistently point out that freelance photographers spend a huge amount of time on business operations rather than shooting.

The freedom is real.
But so is the workload.

Myth #2: "If You're Good Enough, Clients Will Just Find You"

This one might be my favourite.
Because it sounds so romantic.
The struggling artist gets discovered.

A restaurant owner stumbles across your Instagram.
A major brand sees your work and immediately books a six-figure campaign.

Cue inspirational music.

Unfortunately, business doesn't work like Netflix. The reality is that successful creatives spend enormous amounts of time marketing themselves, networking, following up leads, nurturing relationships, updating portfolios, and staying visible. Many photographers cite finding and retaining clients as one of the biggest ongoing challenges.

You can be the most talented photographer in New Zealand.
But if nobody knows you exist?
You're just a really talented secret.
The uncomfortable truth:
Being great at photography gets you hired once.
Being great at relationships gets you hired repeatedly.

Myth #3: "You Need the Latest Gear to Be Successful"

Every photographer has experienced this.
You spend six months convincing yourself that a new camera will solve all your problems.
Then you buy it.
And somehow...
You're still behind on editing.
Funny how that works.

One of the most common photography myths is that success comes from expensive equipment. Yet experienced photographers consistently point to creativity, skill, lighting knowledge, and client experience as being far more important than owning the latest gear.

I've seen incredible images created with modest setups.
And I've seen expensive gear produce incredibly average work.
Clients aren't paying for the camera.
They're paying for:

Your vision

Your consistency

Your problem-solving

Your ability to make their food look irresistible

The camera is just the tool.
The real talent happens behind it.
Although let's be honest...
That won't stop us looking at new lenses online at midnight.

Myth #4: "You're Living the Dream"

Now this one is partially true.
I genuinely love what I do.
I get to work with incredible hospitality businesses.

I meet passionate chefs. I help brands tell their stories. That's pretty amazing.
But social media has created a dangerous illusion.

People see the highlights. The beautiful restaurant. The stunning dish. The finished reel. The packed shoot day.

What they don't see is the uncertainty that often comes with self-employment. Income fluctuations, cancelled projects, late payments, slow seasons, and the constant pressure of finding the next opportunity are recurring themes across freelance creative industries.

Some months feel unstoppable.
Other months make you question every life decision you've ever made.
Usually before breakfast.
The dream exists.
But so does the stress.
And that's okay.
Both can be true at the same time.

Myth #5: "Success Happens Overnight"

This is perhaps the most damaging myth of all. We see photographers with huge followings. Videographers shooting for major brands. Creators with polished portfolios. And we assume it happened quickly.

What we don't see are the years behind the scenes.
The free shoots.
The mistakes.
The terrible edits.
The rejected proposals.
The quiet seasons.
The self-doubt.
The constant learning.

Industry professionals repeatedly emphasise that building a sustainable freelance photography business takes years of persistence, portfolio development, networking, and reputation building. What appears to be overnight success is usually the result of countless unseen hours.

Every successful creative I know has a folder somewhere filled with work they'd never show anyone.
And that's exactly how it should be.

Growth is messy.
Success is rarely linear.
And most breakthroughs happen long after everyone else would have given up.

So here it is - The Truth Nobody Talks About

Being a self-employed food photographer isn't just about taking photos.
It's about building trust.
Solving problems.
Telling stories.
Managing uncertainty.
Creating something from nothing.
Some days you'll feel like an artist.
Some days you'll feel like an accountant.
Some days you'll feel like both before 9am.
But despite all the myths, the challenges, and the occasional panic when an invoice is overdue...
I wouldn't trade it.

Because there's something incredibly rewarding about building a business around creativity.
Not because it's easy.
But because it's yours.

And perhaps that's the biggest truth of all:
We're not just photographers.
We're business owners who happen to use cameras.
And that's a very different thing.

One Dish. The Flatlay

The flatlay is photographed from directly above and is one of the most versatile shots for hospitality brands.

This angle allows me to showcase not only the dish itself, but also the styling, colour palette, ingredients, table setting, props, and overall atmosphere. It gives context and creates a beautifully balanced composition that works perfectly for Instagram grids, menu layouts, website banners, and marketing campaigns.

Flatlays are especially powerful when a brand wants a polished, editorial feel while still keeping things approachable and authentic.

3. The Human Element

People connect with people.

Adding hands reaching for food, glasses clinking, wine being poured, or someone taking a bite helps transform a simple food image into a relatable experience.

This style of imagery creates warmth and storytelling. It helps customers imagine themselves sitting in your venue, sharing that meal, and experiencing your brand firsthand.

For hospitality businesses especially, this human connection can make all the difference in how your audience emotionally responds to your content.

4. The Close-Up Detail Shot

Sometimes, infact nearly all the time - it's the details.
The steam rising from a fresh dish.
The crunch of flaky pastry.
The glossy sauce pull.
The texture of handmade pasta.
The perfectly placed garnish.

Close-up imagery is designed to trigger craving and showcase craftsmanship. These images highlight the quality, care, and attention that go into what you create.

They’re ideal for social media content, website sections, promotional graphics, and storytelling sequences where detail matters.

5. The Hero Shot

And finally… the hero image.

This is the polished signature shot designed to stop people mid-scroll.

The hero shot is carefully styled and lit to showcase the dish at its absolute best. It’s usually the image that leads a campaign, sits front and centre on a website, appears in advertising, or becomes the defining visual for a menu launch.

While every image captured during a shoot has a purpose, the hero shot is often the one that carries the strongest marketing impact.

Why This Approach Matters for Hospitality Brands

Instead of walking away with one nice photo, you now have an entire content library created from a single dish and setup.

This gives your business:

More versatility across multiple platforms

Consistent visual branding

A stronger storytelling approach

More value from your shoot investment

Content that can be reused strategically over time

Professional food photography should work hard for your business. It’s creative and rewarding, but it’s also built on trust, communication, and constantly learning how to run a business well.
After four + years in this space, here are some of the lessons that have quietly shaped not just how I work, but how I show up for my clients.

Creating Great Work Starts With Clarity

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that great imagery doesn’t start on the shoot day; it starts well before that.
There’s often a lot of excitement around a project. New menus, rebrands, launches, and it’s easy to get caught up in the possibilities. But the strongest results always come from clear, honest conversations early on.
Understanding what’s realistic, what’s needed, and what success looks like means we can focus fully on creating something meaningful, without unnecessary pressure or guesswork.

Consistency Behind the Scenes Matters More Than You Think

From the outside, creative work can look spontaneous, but behind it is a lot of consistency.
Checking in with past clients.
Reaching out to new ones.
Thinking about how to add value beyond just the images.
Marketing myself, my personal brand and my business - ALL.THE.TIME.
The flow of work isn’t something I leave to chance. It’s something I actively nurture, because that’s what allows me to keep showing up with energy, creativity, and focus for every project.

Protecting Time Protects the Work

One of the biggest shifts for me has been learning that saying yes to everything doesn’t actually serve anyone.
Time is what allows creativity to breathe. It’s what makes space for thoughtful planning, considered shooting, and refined editing.
By setting clear boundaries around my time, I’m able to give each client the attention and care their brand deserves...without compromise.

Trusting the Process (and My Instincts)

Not every project is the right fit, and that’s okay.
Over time, I’ve learned to trust the feeling when something isn’t quite aligned. Whether it’s around expectations, communication, or creative direction, those early signals matter.
Having open, honest conversations, or sometimes stepping back ensures that when I do say yes, I can fully commit to delivering my best work.

Understanding Value On Both Sides

Pricing is something that evolves as your business grows.
For me, it’s not just about numbers, it’s about making sure the time, planning, creativity, and delivery behind each project are properly supported.
When there’s a shared understanding of value, everything works better. Clients feel confident in what they’re investing in, and I’m able to deliver work that reflects that trust.

The Best Opportunities Are Often Created

Some of my favourite projects have come from simple conversations.
A message.
An idea shared.
A collaboration that started with a “what if…”
I’ve learned not to wait for the perfect opportunity, but to create it. Because at the end of the day, this industry is built on relationships, and those relationships start with reaching out.

When Projects Evolve, Communication Matters

It’s natural for projects to grow.
What starts as a simple shoot can quickly expand as ideas develop, and often, that’s where the best work comes from.
But with that growth comes the need for clear, professional communication. Revisiting scope, timelines, or pricing isn’t about making things complicated, it’s about keeping everything aligned and ensuring the final result meets expectations on both sides.

Strong Briefs Lead to Strong Results

The most seamless, successful shoots always have one thing in common: clarity of vision.

MOODBOARD, MOODBOARD, MOODBOARD.

This is so important to understand the look and feel, not to create copies, but truly see the vision of my client so I understand the project as a whole.

When a brand knows who they are, who they’re speaking to, and what they want to achieve, it allows me to step in and elevate that vision through imagery.
That’s why I place so much value on the briefing process. It sets the tone for everything that follows-and ultimately shapes the outcome.

So - What Is It Really Like?

Bloody difficult. In fact, studies show that people remember 80% of what they see compared to just 20% of what they read, making imagery one of the most powerful tools for growing your hospitality business.

But not every photographer will understand the unique challenges of food businesses. From styling and lighting to brand storytelling, the right photographer makes all the difference. Here are 10 questions to ask before hiring a food photographer, so you can feel confident your investment will bring results.

1. What experience do you have with food businesses like mine?

Not all photography is created equal. While a wildlife photographer may be world-renowned, food photography requires its own set of skills. A professional who has worked with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, caterers, or food brands knows how to capture food in a way that excites customers and drives sales.

2. Can I see examples of your work?

A strong portfolio should showcase mouthwatering food photography, styled to highlight textures, colours, and freshness. Look for examples aligned with your brand’s vision, whether that’s dark and moody cocktails or light, fresh café dishes.

3. How do you prepare for a photo shoot?

Preparation is key. From planning props and surfaces to understanding your menu, a great food photographer will help guide you. This ensures your shoot is not only creative but also efficient, saving you time and stress on the day.

4. Do you work with natural light, artificial light, or both?

Lighting transforms food images. 72% of consumers say food imagery influences their purchase decisions, so it’s vital your photographer can adapt to both natural and artificial light to achieve the style you want.

5. What’s your approach to food styling?

Some photographers handle styling themselves, while others collaborate with stylists. Either way, the goal is the same: to make your food look irresistible while staying true to your brand. Clear communication here avoids surprises on shoot day.

6. How do you ensure the photos fit my brand identity?

Your imagery should be unmistakably yours. Ask how your photographer plans to capture brand colours, mood, and personality. The more you share about your values and customer base, the stronger the results.

7. What’s included in your packages?

Transparency matters. You’ll want to know the number of images, editing, usage rights, and delivery timelines upfront. This avoids unexpected costs and ensures you’re comparing like-for-like when reviewing quotes.

8. Can the photos be used across all my platforms?

From Instagram and TikTok to websites, menus, and print campaigns, your imagery should work seamlessly across formats. Discuss licensing early, especially if third parties (like magazines) may want to use your images later.

9. How long will it take to receive the final images?

Timing is crucial. If you’re launching a new menu or seasonal campaign, fast turnaround matters.
